Losi Mini LMT Sparkle Smash: RC monster trucking gets a unicorn

Losi Mini LMT Sparkle Smash RC monster truck

Losi has added Sparkle Smash to the Mini LMT range, which means your next RC monster truck can have a horn, a mane and absolutely no interest in looking understated. We’re rather pleased there’s still room in this hobby for something this cheerful. Not every body shell needs to look like it’s about to argue with a mountain. This one looks like it ate the birthday cake and has been asked to leave the party.

The officially licensed 1/18-scale LOS01026T5 comes assembled with a transmitter, driving battery and charger. Flexible body details recreate the Monster Jam character. Underneath are four-wheel drive, metal differentials, oil-filled shocks and a brushed 380-size motor. This is news coverage of the listed model; we haven’t driven it or tested the body’s durability.

Pink body, proper RC questions

The styling will do the initial persuading for Sparkle Smash fans, but the interesting ownership question is what you want to do with it. A smaller solid-axle truck offers a different sort of appeal from a big independent-suspension basher: the movement and proportions are part of the attraction, not just the distance it can cover.

Solid axle means the wheels at each end share an axle assembly. Think about how a whole axle moves relative to the chassis, rather than imagining each wheel working entirely on its own. That layout is a big part of the monster-truck look. It also makes watching a model negotiate a modest obstacle more entertaining than the obstacle has any right to be.

That’s not a handling verdict on this truck. Tyres, setup and the surface all matter, and we’d need time with the model to say how this version behaves. The pink paintwork doesn’t give us a shortcut to a review, much as it brightens up the product page.

Open the box, check the plug

The existing package information lists an 810mAh 2S lithium-polymer (LiPo) pack and USB-C charging, with an appropriate QC 2.0/3.0 USB power adapter of 18W or above specified. Confirm the exact charging requirements and current bundle with the retailer before ordering. A USB-shaped hole doesn’t make every old phone plug the right power supply.

Do the battery setup using the supplied instructions and the correct equipment. This is one of those jobs where being precise is useful, and improvising isn’t. Getting it sorted before the truck arrives also avoids the slightly tragic scene of an exciting new model sitting still while you rummage through the drawer of mystery cables.

UK stock and pricing can vary between shops. Compare the complete package, not just matching photographs, particularly if one listing includes extras and another doesn’t.

A smaller course can still be a good laugh

You don’t have to build an enormous ramp to make a small RC truck entertaining. Start with a clear area and a few soft markers. Give yourself turns you can actually make, a place to stop and enough space to see what your steering hand is doing.

Try a clean lap, then another. Reverse the route. Suddenly the corner you thought you’d mastered is coming at you from the other direction and your thumbs have questions. That’s a useful little challenge, whether you’ve just picked up a transmitter or have been doing this for years.

If you’re sharing the truck, take turns and keep the course clear. Show a new driver how to stop first, and follow the model’s age and supervision guidance. Watching somebody get the hang of it is much better than making their first go an audition for everyone else’s amusement.

The ground looks different from down there

At this size, inspect an outdoor spot from closer to the truck’s level. A stone you’d barely notice walking past can be a significant part of its afternoon. Long grass is not simply a green version of a smooth floor.

Indoors, agree the space with whoever else uses it. Pets, stairs and passing feet don’t belong in the course. You can have plenty of fun without declaring the whole house a motorsport venue and discovering that nobody else attended the planning meeting.

Moving between surfaces is interesting in itself. Work out the steering and throttle response afresh rather than assuming the same inputs will give the same result everywhere. You’re learning the model, not failing a test if the first corner goes a bit wide.

Small screws still escape at full size

After a run, clear away debris and check the wheels, body attachments and suspension. Hair and fibres around axles are worth catching early after indoor use. Put a tray underneath when you work: miniature hardware has an impressive talent for disappearing into ordinary-sized rooms. Drop one screw and suddenly you’re on all fours, conducting a forensic investigation of the carpet.

The Sparkle Smash version makes an unmistakable entrance, but its lasting appeal will come from how often you want to pick up the transmitter. For Monster Jam fans or someone after a smaller solid-axle project, it’s an eye-catching addition to investigate. And if your RC shelf has been looking a bit too serious, well, Losi has supplied quite a specific solution.
